We have an exciting opportunity for an Associate to join our Pro Bono & Community practice based in our Perth office.

Our pro bono practice managed by Nathan Kennedy, Head of Pro Bono & Community, embraces our ethical responsibility as a firm to help those in need, and enriches the personal and professional lives of the Hall & Wilcox lawyers who get involved.  

The team considers requests for pro bono legal assistance that are referred by a number of organisations and our people and actively seeks out opportunities to partner with organisations to provide pro bono legal assistance and establish long-standing relationships.

Key Responsibilities

You will be involved in varied work including:

  • providing high quality legal information, advice, casework and representation to pro bono clients;
  • undertaking secondments with Community Legal Centre partners;
  • assisting in co-ordinating pro bono referrals, clinics and other aspects of the pro bono practice within Hall & Wilcox, especially the Perth office;
  • contributing to the establishment of, supervise and co-ordinate pro bono legal clinics;
  • contributing to stakeholder engagement and networks, including relationships between Hall & Wilcox and referral sources such as Community Legal Centres; and
  • assisting the Head of Pro Bono & Community with related projects and areas such as the Hall & Wilcox Community Fund, Reconciliation Action Plan and ESG.

The Successful Candidate

You will ideally have the following skills and experience:

  • 3 - 4 years post admission experience;
  • prior experience in the areas of pro bono, human rights and/or social justice are preferred;
  • an understanding and/or capacity to develop expertise in various areas of law and practice;
  • strong people skills including the ability to motivate others and bring people together to work for a common goal;
  • clear, concise legal writing skills with attention to detail;
  • ability to manage potentially challenging clients and complex matters, in sometimes stressful and emotionally charged situations;
  • the ability to organise and prioritise effectively; and
  • excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate complex information in a practical, accurate and clear manner to individuals and groups.
