The Asian Law Caucus (ALC) seeks a Pro Bono and Volunteer Services Manager at a time when partnerships with the private bar and other volunteers will be crucial to meeting increased community needs. As we anticipate growing demands for legal representation and related support across our practice areas, we're strengthening our capacity to empower more community members through strategic pro bono partnerships and opportunities.

The Pro Bono and Volunteer Services Manager will be ALC's first dedicated pro bono manager, with the opportunity to build and shape this critical program from the ground up. This role serves as a vital bridge between ALC's programs and the private bar and other volunteers, cultivating and deepening relationships with law firms, pro bono attorneys, and other volunteers, to expand our impact. Under the supervision of and working closely with the Legal Director, the Manager will develop systems to effectively evaluate cases, place matters, and support successful pro bono partnerships across our immigrant rights, workers' rights, housing rights, civil liberties and community safety, and National Democracy Initiative programs.

The position combines legal expertise with relationship management skills to strengthen ALC's pro bono capacity and volunteer initiatives at a crucial moment for our communities. You'll join a collaborative team committed to leveraging private bar resources and other volunteers to protect civil rights and expand access to justice with the unique opportunity to create lasting infrastructure for pro bono engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Pro Bono Attorney and Volunteer Services Program Management

  • Develop and implement strategic plans to strengthen the pro bono program, including creating systems for identifying opportunities and needs, case placement, volunteer tracking, and impact evaluation
  • Work with program teams to identify and structure pro bono opportunities across practice areas, coordinating with the Legal Director on impact litigation cases and other legal matters and developing integrated projects that span multiple programs
  • Provide case management for pro bono matters including screening cases for placement, and matching clients with pro bono attorneys and opportunities with volunteers
  • Collaborate with program directors and attorney case leads to ensure appropriate legal oversight and resources are in place for pro bono attorneys and volunteers, maintaining high legal standards and compliance with ethical obligations
  • Recruit, train and support attorneys and volunteers to ensure effective pro bono representation
  • Develop materials and training for pro bono attorneys and other volunteers
  • Support programs with coordination and implementation virtual or in-person brief advice and referral legal clinics
  • Monitor program capacity and identify needs in partnership with the Legal Director, tracking key metrics and generating regular reports on program impact and outcomes
  • Assist in office operations, including case management, data entry, and maintenance, and produce regular program reports for funders and grantors as needed
  • Represent a limited number of clients in direct legal representation, if needed

Pro Bono Attorney and Non-Legal Volunteer Coordination

  • Develop and maintain a program that supports ALC's legal, community outreach, and organizational needs, creating clear position descriptions and scope of work for different roles
  • Implement systems for outreach to, screening of, matching expertise and capacity to needs of, and tracking of pro bono attorneys and volunteers, ensuring appropriate placement across programs and events
  • Coordinate with program staff to ensure pro bono attorneys and volunteers receive proper training and supervision, maintaining regular communication about organizational needs and capacity

Relationship-Building and Management

  • Promote pro bono opportunities by maintaining relationships with law firms, individual volunteers, legal services organizations, and community stakeholders
  • Identify, cultivate, and maintain partnerships with law firms and corporate legal departments, and other volunteer sources, fostering relationships that support both direct services and impact litigation
  • Maintain regular communication with active pro bono attorneys and volunteers, and where appropriate, their supervisors
  • Design and execute volunteer appreciation initiatives to recognize community contributions and maintain engagement

The Successful Candidate

  • B.A./B.S. and J.D. degrees. California bar membership required
  • Minimum 5 years of legal practice experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to civil rights and social justice
  • Strong legal writing and analysis skills
  • Excellence in project management and organization
  • Experience managing complex relationships and multiple stakeholders
  • Experience providing training and technical assistance
  • Experience and/or familiarity with multiple areas of civil rights law, especially in immigration, workers' rights, housing, national security, and community safety.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and knowledge of issues involved in working with low-income immigrant and systems-impacted communities
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly to diverse audiences: a broad range of clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse multidisciplinary team
  • Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze situations, identify existing or potential problems and recommend solutions
  • Values and enjoys working cooperatively with others, both within the organization and in the community
  • Experience managing multiple schedules and meetings, managing diverse activities, and meeting critical deadlines with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in pro bono coordination and/or an understanding of the private law firm and corporate pro bono culture
  • Background in impact litigation or complex civil litigation
  • Experience providing legal training and mentorship
  • Familiarity with legal services delivery models
  • History of working with diverse communities, specifically immigrant communities
  • Experience coordinating across different legal programs
