Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. is seeking a highly experienced immigration attorney to help lead our firm’s pro bono immigration practice in any of the Firm's U.S. office locations. This attorney, which would join as senior counsel and report to our Partner & Director of Pro Bono, would be part of a well-established team of professionals at a firm that truly values pro bono work.
Key Responsibilities
The pro bono immigration attorney would be expected to:
- Oversee, administer, and manage the pro bono immigration docket, including monitoring cases for deadlines, distribution of legal information, addressing staffing needs and tracking data
- Work closely with the pro bono team to improve the quality, expand the scope, and increase participation in the firm’s immigration practice
- Mentor and supervise attorneys handling immigration matters by reviewing work product and preparing attorneys for interviews and court appearances
- Identify, assess, circulate and staff new matters
- Work with the pro bono partner to develop a strategy to institutionalize the immigration practice
- Create and maintain a library of sample documents, templates and other resources to support attorneys working on immigration matters
- Serve as attorney-of-record during attorney leaves or departures, as needed
- Create limited-scope immigration pro bono projects and clinics
- Coordinate and/or lead immigration law trainings
- Foster relationships with legal services partner organizations that refer immigration matters and identify new potential sources of work
- Participate actively and help represent the firm in the pro bono professional community, including the Association of Pro Bono Counsel and key legal services organizations, bar associations, law schools, advocacy groups and in-house corporate counsel.
- Stay informed and current regarding changes to immigration laws and policies and provide attorneys with relevant, targeted legal information
- Work with the firm’s administrative groups (e.g., intake, accounting, marketing, business development, recruiting, diversity) as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
The Successful Candidate
- Bar membership in good standing in primary jurisdiction of practice
- At least 5 years’ experience with a broad range of humanitarian immigration law, including asylum, removal defense, naturalization and adjustment of status, temporary protected status, humanitarian parole; SIJS, VAWA, and T and U visas
- Strong commitment to protecting immigrants’ rights
- Experience working with lawyers in a private law firm environment
- Demonstrated experience in supervising and guiding other attorneys
- Strong leadership skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication and advocacy skills
- Ability and willingness to explain and teach immigration law
- Excellent problem-solving skills, sharp attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Demonstrated experience coordinating work and managing multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines
- Fluency in oral and written English
- Flexibility to travel as needed
- Flexibility to adjust hours and work the hours necessary to meet operating and business needs
Preferred:
- Preferred location is Kansas City, and relocation assistance may be provided.
- Spanish language skills, or fluency in second language in addition to English
