Guide for KC Applications: How pro bono work can assist when applying for silk

Published on 8 October 2024 The guide sets out how taking on pro bono work can be useful for directly demonstrating the competencies that are assessed in KC applications.

Some examples may include: 

• Taking on pro bono cases in an area beyond your usual area of practice and demonstrating your ability to become “familiar with new areas of law quickly and reliably” (Competency A). 

• Mentoring juniors who are taking on challenging pro bono cases, demonstrating an ability to form “productive working relationships” (Competency C). 
• Taking on a leadership role by acting as an Advocate Pro Bono Champion, demonstrating an ability to take work with others and lead a team (Competency C).
