The Pro Bono Immigration Attorney is responsible for working with the Chief Pro Bono Counsel to manage and expand the pro bono immigration work done by the Firm’s U.S.-based attorneys. The Pro Bono Immigration Attorney will support the lawyers in the Firm’s U.S. offices with respect to representation of a variety of immigrant clients and provide oversight of the Firm’s pro bono immigration docket. The Pro Bono Immigration Attorney will also collaborate with the Pro Bono Team and other professionals to support joint efforts and further a culture of pro bono throughout the Firm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and assess new matters with a goal to grow the immigration practice and to expand the number of attorneys working on pro bono immigration matters
  • Work closely with the Pro Bono Team to develop immigration-focused pro bono projects and clinics, including opportunities in partnership with the Firm’s corporate clients
  • Foster relationships with U.S. legal services agencies in the cities where we practice
  • Mentor and supervise attorneys handling immigration related matters
  • Provide sample materials and instructions to support attorneys
  • Review draft USCIS and immigration court submissions and provide feedback
  • Help attorneys prepare for and attend USCIS interviews and immigration court appearances, hearings, trials and interviews, including conducting mock exercises
  • Stay informed and current regarding changes in immigration laws and policies and provide attorneys with relevant, targeted legal information
  • Lead and organize trainings on a range of immigration matters
  • Act as temporary attorney-of-record during attorney leaves or departures, as needed
  • Develop training modules and resource materials, including templates for routine filings
  • Provide overall case management for pro bono immigration docket, including monitoring cases for deadlines, distribution of legal information, and staffing needs
  • Assess recordkeeping systems and policies; modify, create, and oversee procedures as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

The Successful Candidate

  • Juris Doctor Degree
  • Bar membership in good standing in primary jurisdiction of practice
  • At least 5 years’ experience with humanitarian immigration relief
  • Experience with a broad range of humanitarian immigration law, including asylum, removal defense, naturalization and adjustment of status, temporary protected status, humanitarian parole; SIJS, VAWA, and T and U visas
  • Commitment to protecting immigrants’ rights
  • Experience working with lawyers in a corporate law firm environment
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising and guiding other attorneys; strong leadership skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and advocacy skills; ability to explain and teach immigration law
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, sharp attention to detail and ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating work and managing multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines
  • Fluency in oral and written English
  • Flexibility to travel as needed
  • Flexibility to adjust hours and work the hours necessary to meet operating and business needs
  • Spanish language skills, or fluency in second language in addition to English
