We are looking for a highly experienced candidate with a minimum of 5 years post-admission experience. The ideal applicant will possess extensive expertise in refugee and migration law, as well as a strong background in administrative and public law, particularly litigation in the federal courts.

The successful applicant will be located in our Melbourne office and work in our Pro Bono Practice across both our Melbourne and Sydney offices.  

Russell Kennedy operates a sector-leading Pro Bono Practice, with particular expertise in Refugee and Migration Law at all stages of the visa application or cancellation process.

The role offers a mix of direct client work, mentoring and supervision of pro bono contributors across the firm, relationship management, program design, and the opportunity to participate in policy and advocacy efforts to address systemic issues faced by our clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with management of the Pro Bono Practice and broader pro bono commitments;
  • Program design and management of our pro bono partnerships across the community and not-for-profit sector in Melbourne and Sydney;
  • Migration and refugee applications, largely for Protection and Humanitarian visas, and for visa cancellation revocations at the primary, review and judicial review stages;
  • Advocacy and legal representation for people in immigration detention, especially for litigious matters;
  • Providing supervision and strategic advice to lawyers performing pro bono work across the firm;
  • Liaising with our community partners and referral bodies; and
  • Contributing to relevant sector-wide working groups and consortium's on policy, advocacy and strategic litigation matters.
